Overview

The USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) is a comprehensive assessment process consisting of three distinct steps essential for medical licensure in the United States. Each step evaluates different aspects of a candidate’s medical knowledge, clinical skills, and ability to apply these competencies in various settings. Step 1 focuses on foundational sciences, testing understanding of basic principles underlying health, disease, and therapy. Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge) assesses clinical science knowledge required for patient care, emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention. Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills) evaluates practical clinical skills through simulated patient encounters, assessing communication and physical examination abilities. Finally, Step 3 examines whether candidates can independently apply medical knowledge and skills in unsupervised practice, emphasizing patient management in various clinical settings. Overall, the USMLE serves as a critical benchmark for medical professionals seeking licensure in the United States, guiding their readiness and competence in medical practice.
