This one-day exam includes approximately 318 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) spread over 8 blocks, each with a maximum of 40 questions. Each block must be completed within 60 minutes, with the total exam duration being 9 hours.

USMLE Step 2: Harness the Power of USMLE to Enhance Your Medical Training

USMLE Step 2 CS emphasizes communication skills, bedside manners, and medical record documentation in addition to clinical knowledge and skills. It also focuses on preventive medicine and patient counseling. This exam assesses the ability of medical students and physicians to manage clinical cases in various healthcare settings under supervision.

USMLE Step 2 CS utilizes standardized patients (SP) for testing. There are 12 clinical scenarios, each involving a 15-minute interaction with an SP, followed by 10 minutes to write patient notes. During this time, candidates must gather patient information, perform physical examinations, and provide appropriate counseling.

Day 1 – Foundations of Independent Practice

USMLE Step 3 : This 7-hour exam consists of 6 blocks with a total of 233 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), with each block containing up to 40 questions. The exam features traditional MCQs and newer formats based on scientific abstracts and pharmaceutical advertisements. It covers:

  • Preventive medicine

Additionally, this section tests proficiency in patient history, physical examination, diagnosis, and the use of various diagnostic techniques.

Day 2 – Advanced Clinical Medicine

USMLE Step3: This 9-hour exam includes 180 MCQs divided into 6 blocks, each containing 30 questions, followed by 13 Computer-based Case Simulations (CCS). The CCS problems evaluate a physician’s ability to:

  • Assess history and physical examination information
  • Order diagnostic tests
  • Select initial therapies
  • Manage patient care

This day involves a combination of multiple-choice questions and computer-based case simulations.

Scores for each step of the USMLE are on a three digit scale from 1 to 300. As of 2022, Step 1 is reported as pass or fail only. The current minimum passing scores for Step 2 and Step 3 are 214 and 198 respectively.

Yes, you may retake the USMLE. You may appear for the same examination (or step) up to three times within a period of 12 months. Any attempts made after the 12 months should be at least 1 year after the first attempt of that particular step and at least six months after your most recent attempt at that step.
