Overview

Candidates interested in taking the USMLE exam can check the eligibility criteria for 2024. The USMLE exam consists of three steps: Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3, each with different eligibility requirements. It is important for candidates to review the eligibility criteria before applying.

The USMLE is an entrance exam for international medical students and graduates who wish to practice medicine in the United States. The full form of USMLE is the United States Medical Licensing Examination. This exam is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). USMLE Exam Eligibility 2024

It’s interesting to note that the eligibility requirements for the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 components in 2024 are nearly identical. Applicants can take Step 1 and Step 2 CK in any order, provided they meet the USMLE exam eligibility criteria. However, the qualifications for Step 3 differ, as candidates must pass both Step 1 and Step 2 components before taking Step 3.

Regarding age limits for the USMLE, there are none. The USMLE exam authorities have not specified any age criteria, allowing candidates who meet the qualifications to take the exam at any age.

USMLE Exam Eligibility for Indian Students

The eligibility criteria for students in the USA and Canada differ from those for international students worldwide. For Indian students, the eligibility for the USMLE exam is the same as that for other international students outside the USA and Canada.

USMLE Step 1 & Step 2 Eligibility

The details of eligibility for USMLE Step 1 are listed below. Candidates can meet any of the categories of Step 1 USMLE exam eligibility.

  • A candidate who is officially enrolled or graduated from a US or Canadian medical school program that leads to an MD degree, accredited by LMCE. (or)

  • A medical student who is enrolled or graduated in a USA medical school program that is leading to a DO degree accredited by COCA. (or)

  • A candidate who is officially enrolled or graduated from a medical school outside the USA or Canada. Their medical school must be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools meeting the ECFMG eligibility requirements and criteria.

 

ECFMG Eligibility

Candidates from medical schools outside the USA and Canada must fulfill the ECFMG eligibility criteria outlined below.

  • They must be enrolled in or have graduated from a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with an ECFMG sponsor note.
  • The ECFMG sponsor note must indicate that students or graduates of the school or university are eligible to apply for ECFMG certification and examination.

How to Check ECFMG Eligibility?

To verify ECFMG eligibility for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2, follow these steps to search for your medical school in the World Directory of Medical Schools:

  1. Go to the World Directory of Medical Schools website at “wdoms.org”.
  2. Click on the “search” option.
  3. Enter the name and city of your college in the search box.
  4. If your college appears in the search results, click on the sponsor note.
  5. Check the sponsor note to see if it mentions ECFMG eligibility.

Candidates must meet the qualifications for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 at the time they apply and take the exams.

Candidates who have been dismissed or have withdrawn from medical school are not eligible. They must inform the organization that registered them for the exam. Failing to do so will result in a permanent annotation on their USMLE scores and reports.

USMLE Step 3 Eligibility

Here is the eligibility criteria for taking the USMLE Step 3 exam. Candidates must satisfy all the following conditions to be eligible:

  • Pass the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK.
  • Graduate from an MD or DO program at a medical school accredited by the LCME or COCA in the USA or Canada. Alternatively, graduates from medical schools outside the USA or Canada listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools that meet ECFMG eligibility requirements are also eligible.
  • Obtain ECFMG certification.

Additional details regarding USMLE Step 3 eligibility:

  • Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria at the time of application and examination.
  • Candidates who have been dismissed or withdrawn from medical school are ineligible. They must notify the registering organization, as failure to do so will result in a permanent annotation on their scores and reports.

Eligibility for USMLE Retakes:

  • Each USMLE step can be taken up to 3 times within 12 months. A fourth attempt requires a 12-month gap from the first attempt and a 6-month gap from the most recent attempt.
  • Students who pass a step cannot retake it unless required by a time limit imposed by a US physician licensing authority or another recognized authority by the USMLE program.

Sequence of USMLE Examinations:

  • Steps 1 and 2 CK can be taken in any order, provided the candidate meets the respective eligibility criteria.
  • Step 3 can only be taken after passing Steps 1 and 2 CK, as it is the final examination in the USMLE sequence.
